KELANTAN, is a great place to visit if you one of those interested in the history and cultural heritage. For example, there is a World War II (WWII) memorial since Kelantan had been a entry point for Japanese Army to attack Malaya during the WWII.There are also others museum can be visit while you are in Kelantan Such as: Handicrafts Museum, State Museum, World War II Memorial , Royal Museum, Museum of Islam, Museum of Royal Kelantanese Traditions. Beside Museums, Kelantan is also have many great Buddhist (Thai)Temples.

The Famouse one is Wat Machimarran Varran, place for the Largest Sitting Buddha in Southeast Asia and Wat Pothivihan, hold the longest Reclining Buddha in Southeast Asia. That is enough for the introductory, because this post is about places to visit in Kelantan yet.

Here, it is the first Kelantan Food Post in this BLOG. But, why not just cut the crap and jump to the food part?

It is because the location of the stall about to be introduce is near to one of the beautiful temple in Kelantan which is

They served Curry Mee, Wan Tan Mee / Kan Lao Mee, Porridge, Nasi Kerabu / "Cow Jump" (only on Friday and Saturday). However, The Introductory dish will be my Favorite Dish. Wan Tan Mee and Curry Mee. Have some views and come taste it later on your trip to Kelantan.

Seng Kee ‘Loh Shu Fan’ 11/17

this is one of my i-should-have-posted-this-3-weeks-ago-but-procrastination-got-the-better-of-me. anyway, for my Petaling Street food hunt a few weeks ago, i was not alone. hooked up with a forum friend of mine, Gavin, to sample this :
Seng Kee's claypot 'loh shu fan'.
literally translated as 'rat's tail noodle'. this restaurant is famous for this claypot noodle dish. i got a chance to sample this a few years ago, and i've never tasted other claypot loh shu fan better than this served on a claypot with lots of minced pork, with liver and topped with a raw egg, this dish is a heaven when everything is mixed together.

my bad for 'destroying' the egg before the photo was taken. the slight aroma of sesame oil is just nice. not overpowering the whole dish! price is quite reasonable with 3 different pricing (RM6 for a small, RM12 for medium and RM18 for large portion).
apparently Seng Kee is also famous for other dish, one of it that i know is 'sang har
yee mee' (fresh prawn egg noodles) but we did not order it as we were already full just on the loh shu fan alone. plus, i'm not a fan of egg noodles anyway… unlike the usual restaurant where kitchens are hidden at the back of the restaurants, this is totally opposite of it! the kitchen is located right in front of the restaurant, in full view of passer-by. maybe the kitchen behind is too cramped and hot, guess? can i say than open kitchen is started by Malaysians instead of the Westerners? haha! Seng Kee is located along the end of Jalan Sultan. just a bit further from the Bah Kut Teh stall in my previous post. i think people will not miss it from it's open air kitchen.

* a big credit to Gavin for providing the photos taken from his DSLR. this post is without my usual crappy handphone photos. haha!

Bak Kut Teh Stall in Jalan Sultan 11/8

IMAG0147it's one of the friday nights when no one in the house is cooking. which usually mean a walk down to Petaling Street for my fix. i was thinking whether to have a yummy 'lou shu fan' for my dinner in Jalan Sultan or to have Bak Kut Teh located along the same road which i had never tried before. alas, i had decided to take the road less taken…
yes. Bak Kut Teh (BKT) conquered my mind this time. i had walked pass this stall for so many times and noticed that there are quite a number of customers patronizing here. so i decided to pop in. there were a number of choice in the stall too. but i guess BKT is their main dish as that is the largest word. haha!
IMAG0146

my bad for the lousy photo that did not show much of the BKT.
at first sip, there is something that is vastly different from other BKT. the main thing is, instead of the intensity of 'dong kwai', this BKT is a bit heavy on star anise. yes. star anise. it may take some time to get used to, but the taste is still similar to the usual BKT. but the good thing is, you won't get the heaty feeling associated with 'dong kwai' after eating it. there are two type of serving, either in claypot (RM9.00) or in bowl (RM7.00). servings in bowl will be for those who want to order other dishes also.

as with most of food stall, there are no name for it.
but as you walk along Jalan Sultan, you will definitely notice this stall.

will definitely come again to try other dishes that they offer!

Proper Dinner - Kg. Siam Jitra

After feel out of choices for food in Bukit Kachi, i suddenly get an invitation for dinner from my fellow Kelantan junior.
Junior: “Halo a ko (mean brother in Hokkien), long time no see. you free tonight? Let go for dinner at Jitra.”
Me: “ Why so suddenly invite me for dinner nih?”

since my birthday is coming soon (hope fully this not another surprise birthday party *sigh*).

Junior: “ no lar. Just long time didn’t eat outside already mah! OK ar! we rent a car”.
ME: “Ok lar.”

since i also crave for pork. haha…

Set sail for Jitra at 7.30pm. This time the target  is a Siamese Sea food restaurant at Jitra. This another popular place (beside Restaurant 5 Utara) for Chinese UUM students to have their dinner when came to Jitra. After had the seat, the waiter came forward (lucky not so many people that night) and ask for order.
ME: “ got pork ar?”
Waiter: “sorry, our shop is halal. no pork!”
ME: “aiyo… then give me Tomyam and … …”
There are 5 of us, 3 girls 2 guys. and we ordered this:

Tom Yam
Lemon Chicken

Mix Kerabu

Although feel a bit disappointed NO Pork…^^. But this meal did fulfill my desire for complete Dinner dishes : Tom yam, Chicken, Vegetable, Kerabu + a jug of Drink = RM 69.

Pursuit Belle’s Food Quest in Penang

Another tale of Beauty and the Beast. belle and gustoAs usually in fairy tales end up the prince and the princess live happily ever after, in “Beauty and the Beast” Belle married to the Prince which had been curst into a beast.  ‘Belle’ that i know end up live happily too but not with the beast but to the rude, vain, sexist and arrogant huntsman,Gaston - a character in the story. Forget about “Beauty and the beast”, the main point here is the Exploration of ‘Belle’ and ‘Gaston’ to Penang for Food Quest! and This ‘Gaston’ is Sexist but not rude, vain nor arrogant one.
Belle had done her study and come out with a long list of stall name and foods she want to enjoyed while she is in Penang. Haha.. My mom use to said, “You really have good luck with food, every time you come back then come the foods..hahahaa” This time i consider myself is lucky enough to be “hoop-in” to this quest. i will list some of the interesting choice from Belle’s list.A Pong Guan

First one is Guan a Pong. A stall at the road side, located in front of Union Institution at Burma Road. What so special with this a pong? Beside the funny talkative uncle; the a Pam is a soft fluffy pancake with banana and sweet corn inside it.
A Pong Guan     A Pong Guan
Famous Teow Chew CendolFollowed by Penang Famous Cendol, even PCK admit it is “the best in Penang,JB and also in Singapore!” Even my aunty form Labis admited the greatness of the Cendol. Green soft cendol is buried under the great soft chilled blended ice frost.  black marmaladed Melaka sugar and the great fresh white Santan
(aka coconut milk) is poured into the bowl and melt down the mountain of ice. Bla.. bla.. bla.. just dig the spoon and eat it before all the ice is melted else it would not so be ‘CEndol iCe’ anymore!
After spining around at Gurney Walk, we went back to the Burma road for Hockien mee or sometime people call Har mee aka Prawn noodle. Gaston also ordered Loh mee. Both are in great condition. the taste is so kicking ass. After fill in so much food every one is walking with stomach head forward first.. haha perut boroi. It is almost time to head home to rest and ready for the next day.
Second day quest for food begin with the most important meal Theeeeeeeee Breakfast… Yet Belle was disappointed by the keeper. the uncle came out from his coffee shop and say “Sorry  pretty one i can’t fulfill your wish today because we are close two days to paint the shop, come again next time ya.. oh ya and next week  we also close ya.. Sorry.” there goes the beautiful Roti Bakar (Toasted bread) and great morning coffee. Mrs.Pot bring us to had our breakfast at another coffee shop. She recommended a koay teaw soup. Belle try to motivated her self with a famous 12' inch you char koay (another great snack for breakfast) but we will had it at noon because the shop only open at noon.
Kek Lok Si Temple Guan Yin
So, to kill the time we headed to one of the famous tourism spot in Penang, the Kek Lok Si Temple. With a giant new Kuan Yin (God of Mercy) Statute at the top, it is a great attraction to all kind of  people: Chinese, Cambodian, Vietnamese and some other non-muslim people.
Kek Lok Si Temple  Kek Lok Si Temple
After came down from the temple we stop for the Penang Asam Laksa, the famous one in Air Itam and everyone know that. But for me Penang Asam Laksa most important ingredience is the He Kor Source.

The following destination is Tropical Spice Garden. That is did give you the feeling as you read it name. It is a Jungle full with tropical plants and spices. It is also one of the chosen spot for wedding photography.
Beside nice flora, fauna and trail there is a nice cafe located in the Jungle.. haha i mean the garden Called Monkey Tree Restaurant. I found something interesting to drink as a refreshment after a quite tiring walking and  hiking. I found this – water chestnut coconut milk ice. or  what ever the name that i forget...
water chestnut, Monkey Tree Head back to Georgetown again. Looking for a coffee shop call Kek Seng. If you found this coffee shop, it is a must to try the home made Durian ice cream. You can tell how good that thing is as i forget to take photo; because it is really DELICIOUS. It feel like you are eating seedless chill durian. it had to find a photo of it.
[ below photo is belonging of vkeong.com posted with permission]home made durian ice cream
Let go for next dinner. Dinner at Macalister road it is like in heaven for me, it is like the best meal ever had… haha… OK that is a bit exaggerated. But, the Mix Koay Teaw Soup and Mix Porridge. Again i am in heaven and missed the photo of the delicious food. OK, when is say MIXED mean inside part like stomach,Tongue, brain, intestines and…. others on request and not everyone like and have gut to eat all those parts.

Mini Bajet ~ Langkawi 1 Day Trip

The trip had been planed two week before the actual day. In the first plan, the trip was actually planed to go on 31 August 2010 (the Independent [Merdeka] Day).Due to some activities by PCPK Kelantanese, we make it happen earlier, The day is 27.August.2010.
The journey started before the sun light hit the dark. Some just waking up, some are awaiting and three of them are already at the ca.The Perodua Kancil we rent for 15 hours is started at 6.15am. Okey, the math start here. We rent a car from a UUM staff  as the taxi fare will cost us more. car rental is only RM 70 for the day, yet taxi will cost RM 50 per trips. By the ways, there six of us, we will have to travel with 2 taxi then this will cost us RM 200 at the end of the day. So, that is the car.
After almost on hours journey from UUM to Kuala Perlis (that is the nearest jetty to Langkawi). We all are warm up in that Kancil while driving in the morning chill weather. The earliest ferry is ready to depart when reach the jetty. In the rush, i park the car, settle the car rental for Langkawi and pay for the ferry ticket and... There Go the ferry!
(BTW, that not the ferry we took but it is the similar one)

Here is the MPV! thanks to this mighty car 6 of us able to travel together in one vehicle. Its a Nissan Serena. It is in good shape, engine sound good, comfort seating, just cost a bit gas well that not big deal since this big car carry BIG load too... and this car can fit in around 6-8 persons but 7 is the max legal number. but no worry, Langkawi is cool yet don't break the rule. After having the heavy breakfast (since there is someone didn't take their light breakfast) we are ready for the first destination ~   Seven Wells Waterfall.
a nice view but tiring journey destination. Wan to know why? to went up to the waterfall, there is a long ways UP. Here is the half way journey to the top, you do the math. It is a long tire step for a big fat ass like me. fuh... cut the crap... Roll the photo
and i will not show my "happy" barney face here.

The Second destination is ~

The Oriental Village.
(aka Langkawi cable car ) There is alot of shop lots and restaurant around and Hotel too. On the left is a our geng posing in front of the great Gunung Mat Cincang and you can also see the cable car posts if you zoom up in the photo.

One Last stop before lunch is a historical place (square).
Burnt Rice (Beras Terbakar) it is a location where the paddy field is burn due to avoid paying taxes to Siamese during that time. My uncle told me once there is alot of burned paddy scattered around the group in that area. but this is what i get!

After lunch, our next destination is

Under Water World.

Fare for Malaysian is RM 28 a person. i am not sure that is good for bad as i been there for quite alot of time... man when i mean A LOTS it really mean it. for the duration of taking degree in UUM i report there at least one a year. Pay that much for ticket, there is quite something for a person first time there. That place is call under water world, yet it is not just under water creatures listed from marine life, under water creatures, birds, reptiles, and other...

It is a BIG waste if you go to Langkawi but you didn't go to Beach. The hot spot in Langkawi is Pantai Cenang (Cenang Beach) and Tanjung Rhu. So, we did spend some time talking and walking at

Pantai Cenang.

There are quite many other activities you can do there such as: Jet ski, Banana Boat, Parachute and
of course swimming lar...

After sun bathing activities, it is time for shopping. believe it.. you can actually spend RM100 only for chocolate. We make our way back to Langkawi jetty at 6pm, boarding 640. Reaching Kuala Perlis 7.45pm.
Fuh... it really is a rush journey. And as a closure this is our Dinner.

P/S: on the right is the guy we sacrifice from cramping the little Kancil.

Basic expenses of the day (shopping not included)
Main Land per person (round up)
Car rental + Gas + parking RM85 / 5 17
Ferry 2 ways ticket 36
